Inalco MDi: The Large Format Slab Redefining Luxury Surfaces, UK
There is a point at which a surface stops being a tile and starts being architecture. Inalco MDi reached that point long ago. With formats stretching to 3200 × 1500 mm, a through-body design that holds its integrity at every edge and cutout, and a material composition built almost entirely from natural minerals, MDi is one of the most technically serious and visually compelling large format slab collections available in the UK today.
At PietraCasa, we design and supply Inalco MDi for residential and commercial projects across Dorset, the South Coast and beyond.
What is INALCO MDi?
MDi stands for Minerals, Design and Innovation. It represents a production process specifically developed to create high-quality ceramic surfaces that stand out for their exclusivity and customisation, with minerals precisely selected and combined to achieve total aesthetic continuity.
Founded in Spain, Inalco creates high-end, large-format MDi surfaces that combine natural minerals with advanced, sustainable technology. The result is a slab that looks and performs unlike anything else on the market.
The Technology: Full Digital Through-Body Design
Most large format tiles apply their design to the surface only. MDi works differently. Total control of the design, extraordinary definition and an unparalleled smooth feel are achieved through Full Digital technology throughout the MDi production process. Each creation's inner core and outer surface are fully integrated in a 360 degree design to ensure visual continuity between the two.
In practical terms, this means that when MDi is cut, profiled or fabricated, the exposed edge carries the same design as the face. There is no white clay body visible beneath a surface print. This matters enormously for worktops, bespoke washbasins, staircase treads, waterjet-cut inlays and any application where the slab's edge is part of the finished design.
At its core, MDi consists of over 95% natural minerals including clays, feldspars and fluxing raw materials. The production process employs an exclusive sintering method that utilises these minerals under high temperatures and pressure, resulting in a fully vitrified, sustainable slab without the use of petroleum derivatives or chemical binders.
This low-emission, binder-free production makes MDi one of the most environmentally responsible large format materials on the market.
FORMATS AND THICKNESSES
Scale is one of MDi's most defining characteristics. MDi comes in formats of up to 1500 × 3200 mm. Thanks to the almost imperceptible joints between the slabs, MDi surfaces achieve a genuinely seamless appearance.
Slab thicknesses are available in 4 mm, 6 mm, 12 mm and 20 mm, with the large formats supporting expansive, joint-free installations.
As a general guide:
4 mm and 6 mm slabs are suited to wall cladding, furniture overlay and lightweight applications where minimal added depth is required.
12 mm is the most versatile thickness, appropriate for flooring, wall cladding, worktops and interior architectural surfaces.
20 mm is the specification for exterior applications, steps, pool surrounds and any surface that requires structural load-bearing performance and full frost resistance.
Finishes and Colour palette
MDi offers a choice of natural, polished matt, polished high-gloss, bush-hammered and non-slip finishes, alongside an extensive palette of timeless neutral colours ranging from toasts, stone and camel through to whites and pure blacks.
Specific colourways include whites and greys such as Pacific Blanco and Matteria Gris for minimalist aesthetics, earthy creams and browns such as Brazza Crema and Terra Marron for warmth in traditional settings, and bold blacks such as Storm Negro alongside metallic accents in Kaizen Bronce for dramatic contrast.
The palette has been developed with architectural longevity in mind. These are not trend-led colours. They are considered, neutral and designed to remain relevant across decades of use, which is precisely what a permanently installed surface demands.
Applications: Where MDi performs best
Thanks to its different thicknesses and finishes, MDi can be used to clad furniture of all kinds, to design tables, kitchens and countertops, as a covering on walls and floors indoors and out, and to design washbasins and showers.
Kitchens
MDi is one of the strongest performing materials available for kitchen worktops and splashbacks. The non-porous, fully vitrified surface resists staining from oils, acids and cleaning products. MDi is unaffected by solvents, detergents, bleach, oil, vinegar or citrus juice, provided stains are cleaned within 24 hours. It does not burn, warp or absorb moisture, and its scratch resistance means it holds its surface quality over years of daily use.
Bathrooms and Wet Rooms
Large format MDi slabs transform bathrooms. A single slab running floor to ceiling eliminates grout lines entirely, producing a surface that is both easier to clean and significantly more refined in appearance. The non-slip finish options make it equally appropriate for shower floors and wet room surfaces.
Exteriors and Facade Systems
At 20 mm, MDi is a serious facade material. Frost-proof, UV-stable and structurally robust, it is suited to full house cladding, external wall surfaces and architectural facade systems. PietraCasa design and supply complete exterior porcelain cladding solutions, and MDi is among the most specified materials for this application.
Steps and Staircases
The structural performance and through-body design of MDi make it well suited to staircase treads and external steps. The bush-hammered and non-slip finish options provide the grip required for external and high-traffic internal applications.
Bespoke Washbasins and Furniture
The 4 mm and 6 mm formats open up furniture and object applications that thicker slabs cannot achieve. MDi can be formed into bespoke washbasins, wrapped around cabinetry and used for table surfaces and furniture cladding, with the through-body design ensuring a consistent appearance at every visible edge.
Why specify INALCO MDi for your project
There are several large format slab materials available in the UK. What distinguishes MDi is the combination of scale, through-body design integrity, material purity and the breadth of its application range. Very few materials can move convincingly from a 4 mm furniture overlay to a 20 mm external facade. MDi does.
Inalco targets architects and interior designers working on high-level projects, as well as clients with a serious interest in design and material quality. That is the audience PietraCasa serves, and it is why MDi is one of the collections we return to consistently across project types.
